RODANTHE — Dare County released a nearly 7-minute-long informational video about the significant erosion that has led to 11 unoccupied oceanfront house collapses in the Village of Rodanthe on Hatteras Island in recent years.

Erosion in Rodanthe: The Fight to Protect the Outer Banks highlights “the serious erosion issues facing the Village of Rodanthe on Hatteras Island, where rapid erosion and significant shoreline loss has [sic] led to 11 oceanfront homes collapsing into the Atlantic Ocean since May 2020,” according to a Tuesday morning press release from Dare County.

“Featuring interviews with three key local officials—Dare County Manager Bobby Outten, Dare County Planning Director Noah Gillam and National Parks of Eastern North Carolina Superintendent Dave Hallac—the video addresses a variety of frequently asked questions about the situation,” the release said.

The video is provided as a public resource for people to gain a better understanding of the ongoing issue’s complexity. It also covers the efforts by local agencies to prevent or mitigate future collapses and the challenges they face, according to the release.

“Throughout the video, these experts offer valuable insights into the causes, impacts and potential responses to the erosion and subsequent collapses,” the release said.

In the video, Hallac says 10 houses collapsed, but another one took place after his video interview.

The most recent house collapse took place during the overnight hours of Nov. 14-15, according to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
