COINJOCK — Details in the case of the person a Currituck County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot after a pursuit from Poplar Branch to Coinjock largely remain unclear over a week later.
The person’s name, whether they remain hospitalized, if any charges have been filed, the deputy’s name and other details have not yet been publicly released.
Beyond an initial press release posted on the department’s Facebook page the evening of Sept. 14 and updated the following day, the department has released no further case information as of Monday.
After being notified around 5:40 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, of “several vehicles that were operating in a careless and reckless manner”—well exceeding speed limits, running red lights and passing in the turn lane—Currituck County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop, according to the press release post.
That attempt for the “group of vehicles” was unsuccessful, so “a pursuit ensued,” the post said.
Law enforcement and one “suspect vehicle” went down Worth Guard Road in Coinjock, where, at the end of the road, “law enforcement encountered the vehicle and the deputy fired his weapon, striking the suspect,” according to the post.
The suspect was air-transported by Nightingale to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, and was in stable condition, as of the 4:30 p.m. updated post on Sept. 15.
“The scene is secure, and there is no threat to the community,” the post said.
It is unclear how many vehicles were initially pursued by law enforcement.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an investigation that remains ongoing, spokespersons for both the sheriff’s office and SBI confirmed, as is standard practice for officer-involved shooting cases.
Capt. Kevin McCord of the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office said in an email on Monday, Sept. 23, that the matter is an “open investigation still and [I have] nothing else to add.”
This marks the third civilian shooting by area sheriff’s office deputies in unrelated events in less than a year. The prior two took place in Dare County.
