NAGS HEAD — No schools in Dare County Schools were allegedly on a list of schools across the country “targeted” in a TikTok video, but law enforcement presence was increased at all schools on Friday, Sept. 13, following receipt of the video and an anonymous tip.

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office and Dare County Schools’ staff learned Friday morning of a TikTok video and responded jointly, according to a press release sent to Dare County Schools families on Friday around 1:20 p.m.

The video circulating online listed approximately 104 pages of school names from across the country, including several in North Carolina, with a header reading, “CHECK YOUR SCHOOL IF IT IS TARGETED ON THE LIST,” according to the release.

An anonymous tip also indicated that some schools in Dare County and in the surrounding region may be included on the list, according to the release from the school district and sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office, local law enforcement agencies and Dare County Schools’ administration together investigated and found that “none of the schools within our jurisdiction appear to be on the list,” the press release said.

At the school district’s request and as a precaution, the sheriff’s office “placed deputies in and around the schools to assist our school resource officers” and school staff, according to the release. Partners at the North Carolina Information Sharing and Analysis Center were informed of the situation and will continue to track any developments statewide.

“While the validity of the threat remains unconfirmed, we want to assure the community that all parties are taking this matter very seriously,” the release said. The sheriff’s office and the school system “will continue to be vigilant and address any issues as they arise.”

Students should reach out to their school guidance staff or administrators with any safety concerns or questions, and the district’s anonymous See Something, Say Something tip line is also available, according to the release.

Anyone with information on this or other crimes should call the Dare County Sheriff's Office at 252-475-5980 or the Dare County Communications Center at 252-473-3444.
