Parts of the Outer Banks on Wednesday saw a second significant snowfall in less than a month. Prior to last month’s event, the area’s last major snowfall was in 2018.

Currituck County saw the most snow, with 11-plus inches reported in Moyock and Corolla. Grandy saw 5 inches, according to the U.S. National Weather Service at Wakefield, Virginia.

In Dare County, Southern Shores, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk received 4 inches of snow, while Manteo saw 1.8 inches, according to the U.S. National Weather Service at Newport/Morehead City.

Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island only received rain from this winter storm, according to the National Weather Service’s snowfall analysis map.

The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office in a social media post around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday encouraged people to stay home and to drive below posted speed limits if travel was necessary.

“We have been extremely busy with wrecks and weather related calls,” the post said. “We will mark all stranded vehicles with caution tape on the side mirrors to let people know that it’s already been called in. This is so we do not bombard communications with repeat call-ins for they also are staying consistently busy.”

Many local government offices closed because of the winter storm, and educational institutions were also affected. All four College of The Albemarle campuses throughout the region closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Currituck County Schools announced remote learning days Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Dare County Schools had remote learning days for students Wednesday and Thursday and announced a two-hour delay for Friday.

“The delayed schedule will allow additional time for road conditions to continue to improve and provide a safer commute, particularly for staff members traveling from neighboring counties,” Dare County Schools’ Thursday afternoon announcement about Friday said.

Hyde County Schools had a remote learning day Wednesday. Mattamuskeet School had another remote learning day Thursday, while Ocracoke School had a 2-hour delay.
